Let’s talk science...simplified.

There is a theory called “The Central Dogma” of molecular biology, which basically states that biological information is only able to be transferred, in order, in only one direction, from our DNA to proteins. According to this theory, you are powerless to do anything about the health of your body which is predetermined by your genetic code that you were born with.

This theory is incorrect. It has been proven completely false! Scientists have shown us that we actually have an incredible amount of control over how the genetic traits that we are born with are actually expressed depending on how you think, what you eat, and the environment you live in.

One scientist named Konstantin Eriksen wrote about an experiment done with bacteria whose genes did not allow them to digest milk sugar because they couldn’t produce lactase. They were placed in a petri dish with only milk sugar as their food source. Within a few days, all of the petri dishes had been colonized by the bacteria and they were eating it! Their bacterial DNA changed to respond to their environment which proved that even primitive organisms can evolve consciously!

The “Central Dogma” Theory was thus disproved, as information appeared to flow in both directions from DNA to proteins AND from proteins back to DNA. Each cell has a consciousness inside of it with the power to make a decision whether to activate or de-activate our genes. This means that genes change their expression depending on what is going on outside of our cells and outside of our bodies!

How this works is better explained by Dr. Lipton who is a cellular biologist and one of the leading authorities on how emotions can regulate our genetic expression. He states that “the true secret to life does not lie within your DNA, but rather within our cells”. Each one of our cells contains our “genetic blueprint” that we receive at birth; a specific set of genes that set us apart from everyone else (except in the case of identical twins). The outer part, called a cell membrane has receptors that pick up on signals from our environment. This part controls the reading of the genes inside of your cells. The cells then actually have a choice to read or not read the genetic blueprint inside, depending on the signals that they receive. What this means is that just because you have a specific gene in your DNA (like a cancer gene, for example) doesn’t mean that this gene ever has to be expressed. We are NOT controlled by our genetic blueprint from birth! What controls which genes are turned “on” and which ones are turned “off” is mostly determined by our our diet, thoughts, attitude, awareness, lifestyle, and how we view and respond to everything that is going on around us, so STAY POSITIVE!

Taking this even further, the study of quantum physics has shown us that the invisible, non-material world is far more important than the material one. This has led scientists to believe that your thoughts shape your environment even more than physical matter does!

It is undeniable that you cannot alter your actual genes that you have been given, however you ARE in control of your genetic activity. Whether you know it or not, you are speaking to your genes through your thoughts and experiences. Who you are depends on things that happen to you throughout your life because each event changes the way that your genes operate. The more positivity you put in, the more positive the output of your genes.

This is the concept behind epigenetics that is emerging nowadays that is centered around the idea that genes can be changed by our environment and lifestyle. We can control our diet, stress management, and our emotional states. Most of these factors are directly dependent on your thoughts. There have even been studies that show that thoughts alone can improve your vision, strength, and fitness. The good news is that WE ARE IN CONTROL! When we lead a healthy lifestyle with high quality nutrition, exercise, limited exposure to toxins, and a positive mental attitude, we encourage our genes to express positive, disease fighting behavior. Believe it or not, epigenetic begin before we are even born! Our environment begins to be shaped from the nutrition that we receive in the womb! It is extremely important to note that the best kind of medicine is preventative medicine. By altering our genes, we can prevent anything from happening in the first place.

What is a major issue is that there are too many people who believe this myth that your genes control your life, that you are a victim of your heredity, and this is a completely unnecessary concept! The truth remains that you cannot change the genes you are born with, but that doesn’t make your life predetermined. You are not out of luck when you inherit a “bad” gene because your perceptions control your biology and YOU control your perceptions so you can shape and direct your genetic activity!

When disease does occur, the solution according to epigenetic therapy, is to simply “remind” your affected cells of its healthy function, so that they can go back to being healthy, normal cells rather than diseased ones. We do this by changing the environmental instructions of the genes with our lifestyle choices.

Your biology doesn’t have the final say and we are not victims, but rather masters of our health!
