As flu season approaches, there are a few holistic protocols that can help prevent getting the common cold and influenza. Preventative measures really go a long way! Keeping the immune system strong and supported is the most effective way to steer clear of getting infected.
Common symptoms often include general inflammation of the mucous membrane in the respiratory passage, nose and throat irritation, sneezing, coughing, watery eyes, headaches, fever, chills, muscular aches and pains, and temporary loss of taste and smell.
What causes these typical symptoms? Usually it can be a variety of viruses that we encounter all the time. There are also several factors that lower our body’s resistance to these viruses. One big factor is having an overly acidic internal environment, as it allows for a cold or flu to develop more readily.
Edgar Cayce, famous for his ‘Cayce Cold Cure’ and famous words, “A Cold Cannot Exist in Alkaline!” strongly believed that an alkaline body will have much more resistance to getting sick, and that the balance of the emotional and physical body play the most important part in resisting colds.
Other possible contributing factors can be fatigue, stress, allergies, emotional upset, inadequate nutrition, and poor elimination (constipation and clogged skin, for example).
If a fever is present it is important to monitor it, but a fever is not always a bad thing! It is your body’s way of fighting off infection and is often necessary! Do seek medical attention if a fever lasts longer than 3 days, or if you cold/flu symptoms last longer than 5 days. This is important because viral infections can easily turn into bacterial infections which can lead to bronchitis or pneumonia and can be life threatening! Always seek medical attention if an individual (especially a child) has any trouble breathing, as a viral infection can trigger an asthma attack or other respiratory problem.
Now, if we can prevent getting sick altogether by eating a balanced acid-alkaline diet rich in nutrients, vitamins and minerals, exercising, drinking plenty of water, and managing our stress levels, our immune system should be in tip top shape!
It is also important to recognize the warning signs if we do begin to feel a cold/flu coming on, as the earlier you catch it, the more than can be done to prevent yourself from getting any worse! We all know these signs; sore throat, runny nose, sneezing and coughing, feeling like you’re dragging or a heaviness with lack of energy, or just feeling “off” the day before. These can vary from person to person, but only you know your body best!
Referencing back to the ‘Cayce Cold Cure’, Cayce believed as soon as these symptoms begin to surface, taking a teaspoon of baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) in 6-8 ounces of water every hour until the cold backs off OR taking it when you already have the cold can make you feel a lot better too. This is not the most pleasant taste, but it really works due to the fact that it is one of the basic elements of the body and is strongly alkaline. Taking it helps the body recover the necessary amount of alkalinity that your body needs to fight off a cold.
Below, we’ve listed this and a few other of our homemade all natural support remedies and lifestyle modifications to help prevent and fight off the cold/flu season!
- 1 tsp of baking soda dissolved in 6-8 ounces of fresh water and drank every hour until the cold backs off/to relieve cold symptoms once you’ve already gotten the cold
-Eat a lot of citrus fruits, especially organic ones if possible such as grapefruit, oranges, lemons, limes, and even kiwi for their high vitamin C content to help support the immune system.
-Stay hydrated with a lot of fresh water, well above the daily recommended amount of 8, 8 oz glasses of water, if possible.
-Drink plenty of other fluids, especially hot ones such as herbal teas and hot water with honey and lemon.
- Keep warm, and get plenty of rest. It is always a good idea to stop as soon as we feel ourselves getting ill, rather than ignoring the initial stages and waiting to get really sick!
-In the very beginning, it can be helpful to avoid solid food and drink freshly made fruit and veggie juices. If you do eat solids, avoid too many carbohydrates.
-One of our favorite remedies is a preparation of:
1 crushed garlic clove
A dash of cayenne pepper
1 inch of ginger root, thinly sliced
1 teaspoon of raw honey
2 Tablespoons of lemon juice
Taking this preparation several times a day can help throw off a cold!
-Drink teas of sage, elderflower, ginger, yarrow, or thyme.
-Breathe deeply. Take about 10 deep breaths every hour. Meditation can also have relief.
-Good hygiene practices are extremely important to decrease spreading the virus or catching it in the first place
-Wash your hands frequently, antibacterial wipes and sprays are not as effective and may disrupt the natural immunity of the skin.
-Do not swallow phlegm or nasal drainage, but rather spit them out into tissues and dispose of them
-Do not share glasses, silverware, or dishes, and wash all with hot water
-Eat chicken soup with a lot of garlic (a natural antibiotic) and parsley. Homemade is best, otherwise use organic and low sodium. This link takes you to one of our favorite recipes for to make this soup at home: http://blogs.naturalnews.com/healing-garlic-soup-100-times-powerful-antibiotics/
-Take echinacea tincture or capsules, zinc, and 1,000 mg of vitamin C every 6 hours
These support measures strengthen the immune system and help fight off, as well as recover from a cold faster!
Now you’re ready to take good care of your body and take on the flu season!
BE WELL EVERYONE!
